Following the 1869 Riel uprising, Manitoba joins Canada (with a much smaller land mass than today's Manitoba) on July 15, 1870.

Also, in 1870 the Northwest Territories are handed over to Canada by the Hudson's Bay Company.

In 1870 Vancouver Island joins with British Columbia. In 1871, the province of British Columbia will become Canada's sixth province.
