150 Years Of Canada
Even though Prince Edward Island hosted the 1864 Charlottetown Conference which eventually led to Confederation in 1867, they wanted to remain part of Great Britain. What led to Prince Edward Island eventually joining Canada in 1873 was a major financial crisis. One of the options considered by these islanders was being annexed by the United States, something that John A. Mad
The government of Canada offered to take over Prince Edward Island's debt. During an April election of 1873, the islanders had an option of joining Canada (with no increase in taxes) or remaining independent with major taxes in their future.
Following the April election, on July 1, 1873, P.E.I. becomes Canada's seventh province.
