1881 - The Canadian Pacific Railway is Created (February 16, 2017)

150 Years Of Canada

On February 16, 1881, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) is incorporated. One of the main conditions for British Columbia joining Canada in 1871 was the promise by the government of Canada to join Eastern Canada with British Columbia by creating a rail link between the two ends of the nation.

This promise was fulfilled by the successful completion of Canada's first intercontinental railroad by 1885. The CPR initially became the main way that allowed Canada to develop the West. The passenger service of the CPR lasted until 1986 when this service was discontinued. Today, the CPR does not serve the Atlantic Ocean coastline.
