On February of 1899, the co-discoverer of insulin, Charles Best, was born in West Pembroke, Maine (United States) to parents who came from Nova Scotia.

As the research partner to Frederick Banting at the University of Toronto, Best co-discovered insulin, the medicine to treat diabetes. Banting and J. J. R. Macleod received the 1923 Nobel Prize for Medicine, bypassing Best. Banting gave Charles Best half of his Nobel Prize money.
