1895 - Conn Smythe, Founder of the Toronto Maple Leafs is Born

On February 1st of 1895, the future founder of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Constantine Falkland Cary Smythe was born in Toronto. To most of Toronto Maple Leafs fans, he is better known as Conn Smythe. Besides being the owner of the Leafs, he was also a coach, general manager of the team. Additionally, Smythe was a very successful entrepreneur, owning horse-racing as well as sand and gravel businesses.

He created the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1927 by taking over the Toronto Arenas and renaming the team with its current name.
