1894 - Canada's 4th Prime Minister, John Thompson Dies in Office

On December 12, 1894, Canada's 4th Prime Minister, John Thompson dies in office from a heart attack. He was 49 years old. He was the first Roman Catholic who became a Canadian Prime Minister. Earlier, in 1891 the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley (yes, THAT Stanley of Stanley Cup fame) tried to get John Thompson to become Prime Minister shortly after John A. Macdonald's devastating stroke in May, 1891. Thompson, however, refused to accept this position due to the anti-Roman Catholic prejudice in English-speaking Canada. During the Louis Riel trials following the 1885 rebellion in Manitoba, John Thompson is famous for advocating "full justice" for Louis Riel.
