1909 - The Silver Dart, Canada's First Airplane, Flies - The First Grey Cup Game is Played

On February 23rd, 1909, the first ever manned flight in Canada takes place with the Silver Dart being the airplane piloted by Douglas McCurdy. This aircraft was designed and constructed by a team of Americans and Canadians, most notable of which was the prolific inventor Alexander Graham Bell.

On December 4, 1909 the University of Toronto wins the very first Grey Cup. Today, this trophy celebrates the winner of the Canadian Football League. In 1909, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Parkdale Canoe Club's team by a score of 26-6.
