1912 - The RMS Titanic Sinks Off The Coast Of Grand Banks Of Newfoundland

On April 10, 1912 the British luxury RMS Titanic left on its maiden voyage from the port of Southampton on its way to New York City.

It was by far largest and most luxurious ocean liner the world had ever seen to date. At 11:40 P.M. April 14 it struck an iceberg 600 km south of the coast of Newfoundland. By 2:20 A.M. of the 15th of April, the ship broke apart and foundered and sank. Over 1,500 of the RMS Titanic's 2,224 passengers died due to a combination of several factors, including the lack of an adequate  number of lifeboats.

The largest number (150) of dead passengers from this tragedy are buried in three Halifax (Nova Scotia) cemeteries.
