1913 - The Poet Emily Pauline Johnson Dies

On March 7, 1913 Emily Pauline Johnson (known in Mohawk as Tekahionwake) died at age 52.

She was a remarkable and very popular writer, poet and performer who was successfully published in Canada, the United States and Great Britain.

Her father was of mixed Mohawk heritage while her mother was an English immigrant. Pauline Johnson's writing about her Aboriginal heritage helped shape early Canadian literature. During the late 1800's and early 1900's, Johnson was the lone female (and Aboriginal) voice in Canadian literature.

In 2002 author Charlotte Gray wrote a very comprehensive biography of Johsnon's work (Flint and Feather: The Life and Times of E. Pauline Johnson Tekahionwake - see link).
