In March of 1886, the Workman's Compensation for Injuries Act is passed in Ontario. This very progressive law is an indication that our concern about worker rights is not a recent issue. It is the second state-run worker's compensation law, being passed two years after Otto Von Bismarck's 1884 Accident Bill.

According to the Ministry of Labour of Ontario: (See link)
"How long has Ontario had health and safety laws for the workplace?
Ontario's history in the regulation of workplace health and safety began in 1884 with passage of the Ontario Factories Act, Canada's first industrial safety legislation. Selected highlights of significant events from Ontario's health and safety history include:

On April 6, the town of Granville becomes incorporated as the city of Vancouver. Its population is a total of 1,100 people.

On June 13, much of the city burns in what becomes known as the Great Vancouver Fire. Even though they had previously been evicted from Vancouver Island, members of the Squamish Nation used their canoes to help survivors of the fire who were in the water.
