1888 - Archie Belaney, More Famously Known as Grey Owl is Born in Hastings, England (February 23, 2017)

On September 18, Archibald Belaney is born in Hastings, England. Later on in life he would immigrate to Canada and led a very interesting life as a great conservationist. By the time he had died at age 49 in 1938, he had taken on the name of Grey Owl, the great "Ojibwa" conservationist.

Because of his passion for the nature of Canada, as well as his commitment to promoting First Nations causes the fame of his writings went beyond Canada's borders. It wasn't until after his death that his cover was blown; he had no native-Canadian ancestry whatsoever. A 1999 feature film by Sir Richard Attenborough details (with a lot of dramatic inventions) a very small part of Grey Owl's life. (See link).

A more complete biography of Archie Belaney by Historica Canada reveals facts that Richard Attenborough's film overlooks.
