1889 - Lord Stanley is Canada's Governor General (February 24, 2017)

In 1889, the Governor General of Canada (representative of Queen Victoria) was Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby. Until 1886 he was known as Frederick Stanley; between 1886 and 1893 he was known as Lord Stanely of Preston.

Among his many accomplishments, he is most well remembered as the one who presented Canada with the Stanley Cup in 1892. For a detailed history of this avid sports fan, go here.
