1890 - Dr. Norman Bethune is Born (February 25, 2017)

On March 4, 1890 the Canadian physician and medical pioneer Norman Bethune Sr. was born in Gravenhurst, Ontario.

During the Spanish Civil War, Bethune developed the mobile medical units fighting against General Franco's forces. Subsequently, he brought modern medicine to rural China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Ironically, he died of blood poisoning during this war in 1939 at age 49. Today, he is honoured with many statues throughout China. In Toronto, my home city, an excellent high school is named after Dr. Norman Bethune Sr.
