1917 - The Battle of Vimy Ridge Takes Place - The Halifax Explosion

Between April 9 and April 14, the formative battle that results in Canada asserting its own identity takes place, the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

On December 6, the Halifax Explosion kills over 1,900 people, with 9,000 injuries to the people of Halifax. This accident results in the largest man-made explosion prior to the August 6, 1945 Hiroshima atomic blast.
